The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) holds its annual congress from 23 to 27 October 2026 at IFEMA Madrid. It is the reference meeting of European medical oncology: several days of lectures, discussion sessions and clinical trial results that usually set the direction of clinical practice for the following year, breast cancer included.
What ESMO 2026 is
The ESMO Congress brings together medical oncologists, researchers, nurses and other specialists from around the world. Sessions run in person and also through a dedicated virtual platform, so those unable to travel to Madrid can follow the programme online with a virtual registration.
What will be discussed
The programme covers clinical and translational research, updates on systemic therapy, molecular diagnostics, biomarkers and treatment sequencing, plus sessions on supportive care, survivorship and quality of life. In breast cancer, presentations are expected on endocrine therapy, HER2-directed agents and newer treatment classes, as well as data on metastatic disease.
Registration and key dates
Individual registration is still open on the official congress website, with different fees for ESMO members, non-members and trainees, and in-person or virtual attendance. The full scientific programme and practical information on the venue, accommodation and press accreditation are published on the same page.
Why it matters to patients
Oncology congresses are where results are presented before they reach the clinic. Following the programme helps anticipate which changes may arrive in breast units and which trials are open. ESMO also runs a track specifically for patient associations and advocates, and part of the programme is later published in open access.
